Köszönöm a válaszokat Kala! Sok sikert kívánok neked és a csapatodnak!
As I posted about it earlier, I went to a bootcamp in Warsaw in October. Kala invited me, the founder of the team Warsaw Hellcats Roller Girls. The time I spent there reminded me of how much I want to do this sport, I thought I make an interview with Kala, to get to know how she formed the team and what derby means to her. | |
For starters, can you tell me a bit about yourself? I’m Kala. I’m from Warsaw, Poland. Before RD I’ve tried swimming and some martial arts but it wasn’t that what I’ve looked for. I am a teacher at primary school ☺ How did you find roller derby? What inspired you to form a team? I’ve knew RD from the internet. When girls from Poznan made a team, I was sure, that is it! That’s what I’ve looked for! How did you get started? At first, I’ve talked with my twin sister and told her something like „Hey! Paula! Let’s do it! I want it so much!” And she was like „Och, no! Bruises, pain, .... What are you talking about! You’re crazy!” And then, 2 weeks later she came to me and said „Okay. I’m in. Let’s do it.” I was totally ready for it! We asked our closer friends and girls from alternative scene. We’ve set up an event on facebook for other people and at first we’ve met at some pub. What was a practice like at the begining? How many girls were on the team? The beggining was hard, we hadn’t got any roller skates, so we found a small room where we trained condition and stretching, and talked about base of RD. Then we started skate at roller blades and been waiting for roller skates from USA, which we bought on our friend’s skateshop. What was the most challenging thing in skating or roller derby for you? I became more confident, I gained a lot of friends. And I received something that I'm constantly thinking about. I’m so proud of my team now. We go up because veryone works for a common success, some less, others more, but still we’re working together, and it’s not easy when you have 20 people and 20 opinions, but we respect eachothers and the most important thing – we want the best for our team, and we want to be the best. Do you have off-skates trainig with the team? (For example tac-fit, crossfit, etc.) We haven’t got common trainings offskates, but some of us go to the gym or work out in home. Did you had any serious injuries? I don’t remember any serious injuries, just bruices and painfull downs. How did you come up with your derby name? What inspired it? I had a problem with my derby name, because I’ve had so many ideas. Finally my derby name is Wanda Granda – because I wanted something polish, and it sounds like an old warsaw dialect. when I was younger, I was adventurous, and Granda means something like a big row, mess. |

What do you like about roller derby the most? I like common goals, team work and roller skating. I love that wherever you’ll be, you can find derby people and everywhere in the world you can meet the people which with you’ll have common topic. Roller derby community is like a one big familly. That’s amazing. |
Can you tell me a funny story related to your roller derby experiences? Funny thing - recently at the scrimmage my teammate pulled me off the lens of the eye and I played half blind! What are your or your team’s plan for the future? We want to play more games, make a league, we want to grow up and up and up ☺ We want to enlist more referees and NSO’s and of course players! Do you have any advice for beginners in roller skating or roller derby? Don’t be scared, RD people are the nicest guys in whole world! You just have to give 100% to it and take it really seriously, then you’ll match here |
Thank you for your answers Kala! I wish you and your team good luck for the future!
